8/15/2023 0 Comments Best mainstage pizzicato bassI heard impressive demos of VST instruments for keys (piano, clavs, rhodes), but I find the live playback of orchestral instruments a bit disappointing. How do you choose the right sound libraries? Are the defaults of Mainstage or MachFive sufficient or do you need to add NI, EWQL, Vienna, ProjectSAM, Steinberg for better sounds? Like buying new keyboards it seems that buying new sound libraries can get very expensive too. And the fact you shouldn't play without a decent (hardware) backup. I read lots of warnings on this forum about the stability of computers and having multiple devices. As an IT guy I really like the evolvability of such a setup, but I do have some seconds thoughts. The other option is to keep my RD-700 (keybed is not great, but ok) and invest in a MacBook with MachFive or Mainstage or NI or. (No news yet on the next big thing from Kurzweil?) Still the thing with stage pianos is: when you buy a great instrument, you have the best samples at that moment, but you're stuck. The PC3A and PC3K have more programs, but older sounds. (I lost my interest in Roland a bit.) The Forte seems great, and the German and Japanese Grand Piano really interest me as a pianist, but maybe it hasn't got sufficient programs to play the wide variety of instruments needed (see short list below). I learned Kurzweil are amazing instruments with great sounds for musical theater. So my obvious dilemma for 2016 is, should I go for a new stage piano or go the VST soft way? Thanks! I also really appreciate the insights Dave Weiser gave on musical theater keyboard programming. I read and learned a lot on this site and youtube last week. When I look at the K3 book, I see a great variety of mostly orchestral sounds to support the acoustic instruments (strings, brass, woods). Until now I mostly performed as an amateur pianist for theater, playing my Roland RD-700 piano, but after 15 years, I really like to update my gear. Hi, I'm excited to join a community theater next year and play keyboard 3 in their upcoming musical.
